Albuquerque Academy’s hard-fought match against Atrisco Heritage Academy ended in a 1-1 draw during their first game of the Metro Championships soccer tournament. Both teams scored a goal apiece in the first half played at the APS Soccer Complex Tuesday afternoon. Midfielder Grady Gilchrist is credited for the Chargers’ lone goal, putting the ball in the back of the net during the first half. Senior Jude Logan provided the assist for Gilchrist. Vandals are at it again. This time the signs on the ashtrays at Heritage Hills Park were the target. The signs, installed by a private citizen using his own money, were spray-painted black sometime earlier this week. “I’m PO’d,” Jonathan Bertanelli said about the vandalism. Bertanelli not only installed the signs and ashtrays at the park, but he and others have painted the curbs and gates in their free time to help beautify Heritage Hills Park. La Cueva’s girls varsity soccer team was defeated 5-1 by Volcano Vista Friday night in their second match of the season. The loss comes on the heels of a 3-2 defeat against Albuquerque High during their season opener. Friday’s game was the first of the season for the Hawks, who played on their home turf. La Cueva High School’s varsity football team brought the hype to Rio Rancho on Friday, beating the Rams 30-7 in the first game of the 2022 season. According to MaxPreps, there were at least 1,000 fans in attendance with fair weather and dry field conditions for the night. The Rams scored first when Rio Rancho’s Sebastian Rubio intercepted the ball with seven minutes to go in the first quarter, completing a 42-yard return for the pick six. Albuquerque Academy’s first day of school was Thursday, Aug. 18, which started off with the school’s annual convocation ceremony. The La Cueva varsity boys soccer team ended their first game of the season with a 1-1 draw against Albuquerque High on Wednesday. The Bears away game was played just after the La Cueva girls lost 3-2 against the Bulldogs the same day. MaxPreps shows the boys roster includes 10 seniors, 10 juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen led by head coach Easy Jimenez.
