Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation and Frank Frost Photography teamed up to recognize students from across the city who selflessly give back to their community. One student from each APS high school and one magnet school was selected from a nomination by school staff, non-profit organizations, and the community to be acknowledged as one of this year’s “Selfless Seniors.”
The 2022 Selfless Senior for La Cueva High School is James Vanhille, a member of the Albuquerque Youth Suicide Prevention Collaborative. The collaborative is in partnership with the city of Albuquerque and APS and has worked on initiatives and events such as “Project ChildSafe,” a program that gives out free gun locks to aid in suicide and accident prevention. Vanhille gives a brief description of who he is and what he does on the APS Education Foundation Selfless Seniors webpage. Vanhille writes:
“Passion is what animates me. I am James Vanhille from La Cueva High School. I’ve lived in many places and been a student in three high schools. This has been difficult for me. Upon being new at each of my schools, I had a decision to make, be morose in not knowing anyone or make friends, especially with those who are lonely. I chose the second option and love trying to treat others with kindness. If we really look, we can see that people who are disadvantaged, suffering, or friendless surround us. As a member of the Albuquerque Youth Suicide Prevention Collaborative, I work with advocates in Albuquerque to encourage the mental health of youth across the state. We can lift them up. I’m committed to doing so. It’s my passion.”
Vanhille’s photo and blurb can also be found on the Frank Frost Photography Facebook page. In the comments section under Vanhille’s photo, Stella Castillo writes, “Thank you, we have so many young students that could benefit from this program. God bless you.” Tammy Hunt writes, “Wow! You are a force for good in the world!” And Jackie Sanders says, “What a winner he is!”
The class of 2022 Selfless Seniors will be recognized for their efforts at Sandia Resort and Casino April 29. For more information and to see all of this year’s selfless seniors, visit the APS Education Foundation website.
