Some residents and businesses can be wasteful with water, especially those new to the area. The rules are simple, which is to not water lawns or plants with spray irrigation from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April 1 through Oct. 31. Restaurants are also asked not to serve water unless specifically requested in those months as well.
The Water Utility Authority is asking people to keep an eye on excessive water waste and to speak up either by calling or going online to fill out an observation report. The WUA asks people to be as thorough as possible with details, such as where and when are the best times to see the violation, and where the source of water is coming from when waste occurs.
Reporting will result in a scheduled field inspection, and fines can start at $40 but can go up to $2,000 depending on how much waste there is and how many times someone has been fined.
The WUA says it’s up to all of us to make sure water is not wasted in the desert landscape and has tips and tricks to bettering yard spaces,, including how to water and when, as well as how to lose the lawns for xeriscape and native plant life here.
