Principal reminds parents to register students for the 2022-23 school year

North Star Elementary School Principal Misty Smith is urging parents and guardians to register students for the upcoming 2022-23 school year. She said kindergarten enrollment at North Star is lower than expected and that if a student is not enrolled, they should make sure to register soon.

“Currently my kindergarten numbers are significantly lower than expected,” Smith said in an email. “I am projected to have around 76 but my current registration is 44 — which seems unusual.”

Enrollment numbers for other grades levels are where they are expected to be at North Star, but Smith thinks the numbers for kindergartners should be higher. “I am not sure if people don’t know . . . are putting it off . . . or if I just have very few kindergartners that live in our attendance boundary. I am not sure about other schools,” she said.

Principal Crystal Friedman said enrollment numbers are not low at Double Eagle Elementary School and are even exceeding expectations for some grade levels. She said there will be no in-person registration events, but parents and guardians can call or go to the school to ask for help when registering students on ParentVUE.

Enrollment numbers at Dennis Chavez Elementary School were not immediately available, but parents wanting to send their kids to pre-k there might want to look for other options. All pre-k spots at Dennis Chavez are filled and the wait list is quite extensive, according to a secretary at the school. Information about enrollment numbers at Desert Ridge Middle School, Madison Middle School and La Cueva High School were not immediately available.

School registration for new and returning students is required at Albuquerque Public Schools and can be completed using ParentVUE. To login or create a ParentVUE account, visit aps.edu/students-parents/parentvue-studentvue. The ParentVUE mobile app is also available on the Apple Play Store and Google Play.

ParentVUE helps parents and guardians to keep track of student grades and attendance and can be used to contact teachers through the Synergy Mail tool. Class schedules, graduation requirements, parent-teacher conference dates and immunization records can also be accessed through ParentVUE. Contact the school the student will be attending for assistance registering them through ParentVUE.
