La Cueva High School dance and cheer teams will perform at the NMAA State Spirit Championships Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March 19, at the Pit.
The cheer squad will perform in the Gameday competition at 4:40 p.m. Friday in class 5A, with the cheer and music competition set for 6:25 p.m. On Saturday, the pom dance team competes at noon with the military competition at 2:55 p.m.
According to the NMAA guidelines, “The score for Gameday is the total of each judges’ scores from Band Chant/Fight Song and Crowdleading minus any deductions then divided by the total number of judges for an average score. The score for Cheer with Music is the total of each judges’ scores minus any deduction then divided by the number of judges for an average score.” The scores for the Gameday and Cheer with Music competitions are then added together for a team’s final score.
For the pom competition, dancers must use pom-poms at least 80% of the time. Characteristics of a pom routine should “include synchronization and visual effect, along with proper pom placement and dance technique.”
For the military dance competition, “the emphasis will be on synchronization, choreography, technique and execution. Military is precision in style and incorporates many sharp, concise movements that showcase formation changes, level changes, visual effects, group work, contagions, ripples, kicks, etc,” according to NMAA guidelines.
Adult tickets are $15 for a day pass with includes re-entry or $10 for with no re-entry. The fee is $5 of students in kindergarten through 12th grade, seniors 65 and older, and military service members with no re-entry. Parking is $5 per car. Concession stands will also be available.
The University of New Mexico is only accepting credit cards at its facility. No cash will be accepted.
