Albuquerque Academy alum, philanthropist and investment manager Ian McKinnon will be the keynote speaker at Albuquerque Community Foundation’s Notable New Mexicans in Philanthropy speaker series.
The event takes place 6-7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Albuquerque Academy’s Simms Auditorium. Anyone can register to attend in-person or virtually through the Albuquerque Community Foundation’s website.
According to the website’s registration page, McKinnon “will speak about his inspiring philanthropic work and offer perspective on what makes charitable giving in New Mexico special.”
A profile of McKinnon on the Santa Fe Institute website says he is the founding partner of Sandia Holdings, LLC, in Greenwich, Connecticut, and previously spent 20 years at Ziff Brothers Investments before retiring as managing partner. He also worked as a consultant for Bain & Company and as an investment banking analyst at Merrill Lynch & Co. McKinnon earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and graduated summa cum laude from Occidental College.
McKinnon is one of the founding partners of TEAM8, a founding partner of New Mexico United and a principal owner of Venezia FC, a Serie B soccer club in Italy. He is also an investor in the Rajasthan Royals of the Indian Premier League for cricket.
In addition to investing in sports, McKinnon sits on the boards of the Santa Fe Institute, Albuquerque Academy and Marin Academy. He is also a member of the board of directors of Kyber Data Science and advisory board member of HighVista Partners, the McKinnon Center for Global Affairs and the Barack Obama Scholars Program.
McKinnon and his wife Sonnet donated $5 million to the University of New Mexico toward the construction of the $25.4 million McKinnon Center for Management, completed in 2018. The center replaced the Anderson School of Management building and is one of the newest facilities on UNM’s main campus.
