Police are continuing their investigationof an officer-involved shooting along Cibola Loop in northwest Albuquerque that left one man dead and sent a woman to the hospital.

The APD Public Information Officer Twitter account posted about the incident at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday, noting that all officers are OK.

“This incident actually started yesterday morning,” Police Chief Harold Medina said in a video update posted Thursday evening, saying the department received a call about a mental crisis at about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

He said a crisis team was sent out and talked with a male individual “who was not suicidal.”

“We had no authority to transport this individual to get any kind of help,” Medina said, but he was given information on available services for help in a domestic-related situation.

“Fast forward to today, at about 3 o’clock, officers  get dispatched here referencing an individual firing shots,” the chief said. “Officers arrived on scene; they did hear the shots being fired.”

As officers approached the apartment complex, Medina said a man appeared and pointed a handgun at a sergeant. The sergeant exited his vehicle in an attempt to confront the man, who disappeared around a corner.

“At this time came into view of other officers, at least one shot was fired and the suspect died on scene as the result of a gunshot wound,” Medina said.

“We currently have three victims who had firearms pointed at them,” he continued. “That number could grow as the investigation unfolds.”

He said one woman, possibly the suspect’s wife, with a would that could be the result of a gunshot and “had signs of being battered.” She was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Medina also said that a firearm and shell casings were recovered at the scene and that they would be there the rest of the night to “trying to piece together what occurred.”

Officers are currently on scene along Cibola Loop NW following an officer involved shooting. All officers are okay. Please seek alternate routes and avoid the area.
