The city of Albuquerque is teaming up with the Los Angeles Sparks and DreamBIG to host a two-day middle school basketball tournament at multiple locations in Albuquerque.
The tournament tips off with a welcome ceremony at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center at 6:30 p.m. today, Aug. 25. Tournament games begin Friday, Aug. 26, at NDB Multigenerational Center, The Fieldhouse and Albuquerque High School. Tournament finals will be played Saturday, Aug. 28, at Albuquerque High School at 10 a.m. for the girls and 11:30 a.m. for the boys.
The Los Angeles Sparks are a professional team in the Women’s National Basketball Association. The Sparks promote social justice and women’s empowerment through various campaigns. According to the L.A. Sparks website, “The Los Angeles Sparks #WeAreWomen campaign began in 2015 in an effort to honor standout women and young girls in the Los Angeles community who share our goals of empowering the Los Angeles community and females of all ages.”
DreamBIG is a Boston based nonprofit with the mission of empowering girls and women through physical activities. According to DreamBIG’s website, its mission is, “Helping girls and young women from low-income situations to achieve their dreams by providing them with the equipment, sports attire, program and college showcase fees and leadership training needed to enable them to participate in sports and physical activities that contribute to their health, education and overall well-being.”
