La Cueva High School tennis players are state champs in two 5A competitions.
Sophomore Cameron King took the title in the girls singles competition while senior Alex Lumanog and junior Calvin Van Dyke took first in the boys doubles competition during the 2022 New Mexico Activities Association State Tennis Championships.
Bears senior Tanin Ramnath took second place after being defeated by Philip Bosin of Eldorado in the boys singles competition. The championships took place at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex May 4-5.
King defeated La Cueva teammate Stephanie Romero 6-3, 6-4. Lumanog and Van Dyke defeated Piedra Vista’s John deKay and Nathan Heidke 6-2, 6-0. Bosin beat Ramnath 6-0, 2-0 after the match was retired.
In a New Mexico Activities Association YouTube video showing highlights of the May 5 finals, King says, “I’m so proud of Stephanie also that we got to both play for La Cueva, represent La Cueva. I was happy I got to play someone that has such great sportsmanship and is just really my friend.”
La Cueva boys and girls are seeded number one in the team competition, which continues Friday and Saturday. In class 4A, Albuquerque Academy is seeded number one in team competition, which also continues today through Saturday.
Albuquerque Academy’s Connor Dils and Tanner Dils took first place after defeating fellow teammates Jacob Anderson and Austin Curtis 6-2, 6-0 in the boys doubles competition. Chargers’ Joseph Braun took second in the boys singles competition after losing 6-2, 7-6 to Hope Christian’s Luciano Silveria.
