The final list of 2022 National Merit Scholarship winners is in, and two are from schools in the Northeast Heights. Nicholas Mohoric of Albuquerque Academy won the National Merit University of New Mexico Scholarship, with a probable career field in architecture. Henri Li of La Cueva won the National Merit Florida State University Scholarship, with a probable career field in biochemistry. The Bears varsity volleyball team took first place at the Sally Moos Invitational Tournament in Centennial, Colorado, over the weekend. College recruiters from New Mexico, Texas and Colorado will be scouting players at the upcoming Girls College ID Camp 2022. The camp takes place at Albuquerque Academy July 18-20 and costs $175 per player. Ninth- through 12th-grade girls are invited to register for the camp on the Goals Soccer Academy website. Thirty of the 60 open spots were still available as of July 11. Neighborhood associations planning on hosting a National Night Out event are being asked to register their event at cabq.gov/national-night-out by July 26. Once registered, events will be shared with city officials, Albuquerque Police Department officers and crime prevention personnel so they can attend as many events as possible. National Night Out events are organized around the country to bring neighbors together through block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and other community events to send a message that they are fighting back against crime. Mosquitoes may be out in full force, but the city has options to help eliminate the pesky bugs. The Environmental Health Department Urban Biology Division provides a variety of tools and information to combat mosquitoes. The department’s website says individuals can ask for mosquito spray to be applied to an area by calling 311, which takes requests for mosquito control from Albuquerque and Bernalillo County residents. Callers will need to provide their contact information and the exact address for the requested treatment. Drivers can turn right on a solid red light at the Paseo del Norte and Tramway intersection. The new signal at the intersection in northeast Albuquerque has some drivers frustrated with NMDOT’s recent work. When traveling east on Paseo, a green turn arrow will flash to yellow and then red before changing to a solid red light for those turning south onto Tramway. After the signal was installed, no signage was added telling drivers that they can or cannot turn right on the solid red light, which is the cause of the frustration and confusion.
