The Makerspace at Georgia O’Keeffe Elementary has the tools needed to enter the space with an idea and leave with a completed project brought to life. This communal space, facilitated by instructor Cory Calvert, has just about anything and everything one would need to make almost anything imaginable. But students cannot make these projects come to life without outside contributions from the community. Children in kindergarten to eighth grade can enjoy Explora’s half-day camps from March 17 -25 with two topics to choose from each day for $50 per day. Workshops range from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parents can choose from one to all five days to register. One person and the suspect are dead after a shootout at about 4 p.m. Monday east of Tramway on Montgomery. Two police officers were also injured in the incident. According to ABQ RAW, the shooter was also armed with an axe and machete when shots from a shotgun had been fired from a nearby home. Inside of St. Stephens United Methodist Church on Juan Tabo is a quaint little java shop called Solid Grounds, which is serving more than coffee. The café has gained a good following for its live music performances at 7 p.m. every Saturday. The Peppertree neighborhood has a unique public arts installment displayed not only in one area, but throughout the Peppertree community entrances and on their neighborhood signs. It was a collaboration between two different mediums with metal and ceramic tile works. The piece, commissioned in 2001 by the city of Albuquerque Publics Arts program, is named “Natural Vistas” by metals artist, John Bell and ceramicist Margy O’Brien. The collaboration features tile work of a mountain desert view, much like the one seen from the Peppertree Neighborhood, and the metal works feature local plant and wildlife with Geckos, eagles and native cacti.…
The Metro Youth Art Exhibit showcases middle and high school student artists throughout the Albuquerque Public School district. Mediums range from photograph, to painting, digital art, sculpting and drawing. The exhibit, at 912 Oak St. SE, Building M (near the CNM Main Campus) runs until March 18 when APS will announce the winners and honorable mentions. Driving around, more and more one can see that Little Free Libraries have been popping up throughout many Albuquerque neighborhoods, but especially since the pandemic, when residents had time to work on such projects. The global book-sharing movement aims to increase reading access by allowing residents to peruse, take or leave books at exchange locations. The Little Free Libraries site has a map showing all of the spots with registered locations and has an app where you can pinpoint locations close to you. The Department of Cultural Affairs now offers what they’re calling a FamilyPass for up to six people per household and can be picked up at any local library in the city for 15 state-run museums and historic sites throughout the state for free.
