School rankings can be all-encompassing when a family is looking to move to a new city or neighborhood, and can even sometimes determine how and where a family will live and go to school for years to come, so school rankings and stats can make all the difference when looking to better your child’s education. Albuquerque libraries are teaming up with Parks and Recreation Open Space to offer free beginner birding classes for adults wanting to learn about bird watching. Classes will be instructed by park rangers. In this workshop, folks will learn how to use binoculars and field guides to identify common species of birds. The ranger then takes everyone on a short, guided walk with pocket guides and binoculars provided. The workshop will be from 4:30-6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Lomas/Tramway Public Library, 908 Eastridge Drive NE. No registration is required. When a refugee family arrives in New Mexico, they often come with little to no possessions besides the clothes on their backs in search of a better life. Often these families have had their whole lives uprooted by violence or persecution because of race, religion, nationality or membership in a particular social or political group. These families are forced to start their lives over, often just needing a leg up to work toward a self-sufficient life in a foreign place. The FBI and Albuquerque Police are investigating a robbery that occurred at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Bank of the West, 2101 Eubank Blvd. NE, and are offering a $2,000 reward. The suspect entered the bank and demanded money, implying he had a weapon. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of money to the suspect, and he then ran eastbound on Snow Heights Blvd. NE. The robber was a Caucasian male, 6 feet tall, with a thick build, neck tattoos, shaved head and a brown beard. He was wearing a black hoodie, black sweatpants and black mask with purple gloves.…

Albuquerque Fire Rescue was dispatched to a small residential kitchen fire at 12216 Vienna Dr. NE at 5 p.m. Friday. Engine/Station 16 was first on scene. After arriving, firefighters found smoke coming out of the front door of the single-story home. Residents  were already outside when AFR arrived, and fire crews took a hose line in through the front door and quickly extinguished the small fire that was contained to the kitchen.
