Madison Middle School hosted its first volleyball games of the season against Desert Ridge on Wednesday, ending the night with one win and one loss.

The B team played first with a close 26-24 score in the first set and losing 25-15 in the second. Madison’s volleyball coach and gym teacher Michael Gallegos said the B team “played really well and hung in there”

The A team played next, securing a 25-10 win in the first match and a 25-12 victory in the second. “They worked really well together to start the season at 1-0 and never let up the entire match,” Gallegos said. “Service kept Desert Ridge on their heels, and they couldn’t figure out how to stop Madison with a constant barrage of hard serves and hits from players like Emagen Shultz, Camilla Villarreal, Charlie Ferguson and Sofia Flores-Gallegos.”

Ferguson, Flores-Gallegos and Villarreal represented New Mexico at the National Volleyball Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Indianapolis, Indiana, over the last two years. With the experience and skills the different players bring to Madison’s teams, Gallegos is confident they can win the local tournament that takes place in mid-October.

“The girls are working hard and hope to work towards bringing a championship for Madison at the end of the season,” Gallegos said. “We are very blessed here at Madison to have some of the best volleyball players in the state of New Mexico.”

Madison takes on Lyndon B. Johnson Middle School Monday, Sept. 12 at Madison Middle School. The first game starts at 5 p.m. and the second at 6 p.m.
