La Cueva’s boys varsity basketball team got the win against Eldorado on Friday, walking away with a 59-56 victory.

The Friday evening game, played at Albuquerque High, was game 18 of the 2023 APS Metro Boys Basketball Tournament. La Cueva will play the winner of the Highland Atrisco Heritage game for the fifth place spot in the tournament. Eldorado will play the loser of that game for the seventh place spot.

The top four teams in the tournament were Volcano Vista, West Mesa, Sandia and Cleveland. Volcano Vista defeated West Mesa 67-46 on Friday and will advance to the finals.

The championship game of the tournament will be played Saturday, Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. The battle for third place will be the same day at 2 p.m. between West Mesa and the loser of the Sandia Cleveland game. The final and third place games will be played at Albuquerque High.

There was plenty of action in the Eldorado La Cueva game. The game was tied 50-50 in the fourth quarter with 3:59 left to go. El Dorado had the lead most of the game up until that point. La Cueva only had a one point lead with 39.5 seconds left in the game with the score at 57-56. Eldorado couldn’t come back and ended up fouling the Bears at the last second, giving up another two points. Some of the second half action was captured on video.
