Learning to play the ukulele can be fun, easy and free, courtesy of the Albuquerque Public Library Foundation.
The program started in Hawaii in 2021 and has expanded is nationwide. Since the launch, libraries cannot keep up with demand for use. The goal of the lending program is to make “ukulele-playing opportunities accessible for all by allowing the instruments to be checked out as easily as books at any public library.”
People may worry where to start when learning a new instrument, but when checking out this four-string instrument an instructional DVD, a digital tuner and instructional books are all included. Each checkout period is three weeks, and the instruments cannot be placed on hold.
There are four different sizes of ukulele to include soprano, concert, tenor and baritone. The soprano tends to be best for beginner as it is the smallest for children and people with smaller hands.
The program is offered at Juan Tabo, North Valley, San Pedro, Tony Hillerman and Erna Fergusson Libraries. To find if the Juan Tabo library has some in stock, call 505-291-6260.
