The La Cueva varsity softball team was eliminated from the 2022 New Mexico Activities Association Softball Championships after losing to Centennial 10-7 on Friday. The lady Bears were moved to the consolation round after being defeated by Carlsbad 10-0 on Thursday. Both games were played at Cleveland High School softball complex in Rio Rancho.

Carlsbad advanced to the championship match after defeating Alamogordo 9-7 on Friday. The championship match is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the University of New Mexico softball field south of the Pit. Carlsbad will play the winner of the round four consolation game between Alamogordo and either Piedra Vista or Centennial.

The lady Bears finished 20-8 overall and 10-0 in 5A District 2. La Cueva is ranked No. 7 in the state and was seeded No. 4 in the tournament. Carlsbad is ranked No. 1 in the state and is the top-seeded team in the tournament.

After Friday’s loss, La Cueva Curriculum Assistant Principal Ashley Keilbarth tweeted, “Our Lady Bears fought hard but came up three runs short. They had an incredible season-we are so proud proud of you!”

LCHS Dana Lee replied, “Great season, Lady Bears! Hold those heads high!
