Students at La Cueva High are donating gifts to different charities as part of the school’s 12 Days of Giving event.

Day one began with donations to Make-A-Wish New Mexico, and on day two students collected non-perishable food items for Roadrunner Food Bank.

Monday, Dec. 12, is day eight of donations, with students collecting shampoo, conditioner, face wash and disposable kitchen products for the Barrett Foundation. The foundation provides shelter and supportive services to women and children experiencing homelessness.

La Cueva Key Club member Ziana Hossain explained more about the 12 Days of Giving in an email.

“The 12 Days of Giving project at La Cueva is a supply and food drive that aims to help families in need during December 1st – Dec 16th. Key Club has chosen to support the Barrett Foundation, where all are invited to donate various shelter supplies and other resident requests for women and children experiencing homelessness,” Hossain said. “It is a great community project where Key Club members and other clubs at La Cueva come together and share the mutual benefit of helping those in need while spreading hospitality.”

On day nine, students will donate to Paws & Stripes, an organization dedicated to connecting veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries to trained service dogs. On day 10 socks, hats, mittens, feminine hygiene products and toiletry items will be donated to Backyard Broadcast, a teen-run organization raising awareness about sex trafficking.

Pet toys and items for Operation Silent Night will be collected on day 11, and on day 12 students will provide donations to Joy Junction. Previous days of giving included a Happy Birthday Project, donations to Adopt an LC Family, Candy/Letters to the Troops, gifts to the Albuquerque Make Merry Project and donations to Toys for Tots.

More information about 12 Days of Giving can be found on the La Cueva website. For additional questions, contact the school activities director Lacee Metzger at manus@aps.edu.
