    Football

    La Cueva’s varsity football team defeated Albuquerque High 48-8 Saturday, Sept. 24, in a non-conference away game. The Bears are 5-1 this season and are ranked No. 1 in Albuquerque by MaxPreps. They are ranked No. 2 in New Mexico and Class 6A, behind Centennial High School, which has a 28.1 rating by MaxPreps. La Cueva has a 26.8 rating, just ahead of Cleveland, which has a 26.4 rating. The Bears play Eldorado Friday, Sept. 30, in their first home conference game of the season. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

    Aidan Armenta, who was called the best quarterback in the state by LCHS athletic director Brandon Back, announced Sunday on Twitter that he will be attending the University of New Mexico to play for the Lobos. “Staying home… Committed to the University of New Mexico,” his tweet reads. According to MaxPreps, Armenta has 1,520 passing yards and scored one rushing touchdown for the Bears this season.

    Soccer

    The boys varsity soccer team is on a hot streak, winning its last six games. The team currently has an 8-1-3 overall record and 2-0 record in 5A District 2. They shutout West Mesa 6-0 Tuesday, Sept. 20, then went on to defeat Hobbs 3-0 Thursday, Sept. 22. On Saturday, Sept. 24, they smoked Piedra Vista 9-1 in a district away game. The Bears are ranked 312 in the country and fifth in the state by MaxPreps.

    The girls varsity team is also on a six-game winning streak, destroying West Mesa in a 10-0 shutout Tuesday, Sept. 20, before defeating Hobbs 2-0 in a non-district home game Thursday, Sept. 22. They beat Piedra Vista 3-0 on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Lady Bears are ranked 179 in the country by MaxPreps and No. 6 in the state. They play Sandia in a district home game at 6:45 p.m.  Tuesday, Sept. 27.

    Volleyball

    The Lady Bears varsity team extended its winning streak last week, beating Cleveland 3-1 Tuesday, Sept. 20, and then winning all three sets against Las Cruces, Cibola and Centennial on Saturday, Sept. 24. La Cueva’s varsity team is ranked No. 1 in the state by MaxPreps. They are undefeated with an 11-0 record this season. They take on Volcano Vista in a non-district away game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.

    The JV team currently has a 4-2 record, having lost its second match of the season to Cleveland 2-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 20. They defeated Sandia Prep 2-0 on Thursday, Sept. 22. Up next is Volcano Vista at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27. The freshman team has a 5-1 record, defeating Cleveland 2-1 on Tuesday and Sandia Prep 2-1 on Thursday. They also play Volcano Vista on Tuesday, Sept. 27. That game starts at 4:30 p.m.

    Cross-country

    La Cueva girls varsity runner Arianna Thiel-Hadjilambrinos placed fourth in the Sept. 24 La Cueva XC Invite with a time of 20:33.1. Varsity runner Spencer Gilbertson also placed fourth for the boys with a time of 17:11. La Cueva’s girls JV team placed third in the invite, and the boys C-team placed first.
