Get ready to dive into summer with the Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program. In-person registration begins June 4 at any of the 18 participating Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Public Library branch locations.

The Summer Reading Program is a free eight-week program that encourages people of all ages to read or be read to over the summer. This year’s program offers special events at several library locations, including Drums Around the World with Kevin Kinane Saturday, July 2, at the Cherry Hills Library. The 11 a.m. event provides dozens of percussion instruments for the whole family to hit, scrape or shake during the interactive music program.

Special children’s and family events at other branch locations include Mr. Stinky Feet’s Beach Party, John Polinko’s Magic and Juggling, and Pig Out on Reading with Farmer Minor. Advance registration is not required at any of the special events. Call or check in at a library information desk for dates and locations of the events, as some locations have changed.

Along with the special events, the Summer Reading Program provides weekly prizes and entry into the grand prize drawing at each branch location for participants who turn in a completed reading log at the end of the program.

The Summer Reading Program webpage says it is important to read because, “Studies have shown that children who read during the summer are more able to maintain their reading skills and that children who see their parents read, or who read with their parents, generally score higher on standardized tests.”

The webpage also says reading is important for the entire community and that it’s a free and “fun, easy, zero-risk way of showing your support for the Public Library and its services.”
