    Dec. 20 is the last day of the fall semester for schools following the Albuquerque Public Schools traditional calendar, but there is still a lot for students to do before report cards come out. The following is a breakdown of important events happening at La Cueva High School, Desert Ridge and Madison middle schools in December.

    La Cueva High School

    Dec. 9 is the deadline for seniors to apply for the Native American Seals & Stole award. The award allows Native American seniors to wear up to four seals with their gap and gown at commencement ceremonies and provides an opportunity to learn more about their culture, contribute to their community and learn the Zuni or Navajo language.     Finals start Friday, Dec. 16, and continue until Tuesday, Dec. 20. The schedule for those days is as follows:

    Friday, Dec. 16

    • 7:25-9:25 a.m. – Study hall (report to second-period class)
    • 9:25-9:40 a.m. – Break
    • 9:40-11:40 a.m. – Period two final
    • 11:40 a.m.-12:25 p.m. – Lunch
    • 12:25-2:25 p.m. – Period three final

    Monday, Dec. 19

    • 7:25-9:25 a.m. – Period four final
    • 9:25-9:40 a.m. – Break
    • 9:40-11:40 a.m. – Period five final
    • 11:40 a.m.-12:25 p.m. – Lunch
    • 12:25-2:25 p.m. – Period six final

    Tuesday, Dec. 20

    • 7:25-9:25 a.m. – Study hall (Report to first-period class)
    • 9:25-9:40 a.m. – Break
    • 9:40-11:40 a.m. – Period one final
    • 11:40 a.m.-12:25 p.m. – Lunch
    • 12:25-2:25 p.m. – Period seven final

    Desert Ridge Middle School

    Middle school students at Desert Ridge are on their final stretch of the fall semester. Here are some important dates and events happening at the school before winter break:

    5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6: Parents and guardians with students trying out for girls basketball must attend a mandatory meeting in the school cafeteria. Tryouts for sixth and seventh graders take place 3:20-5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, and Friday, Jan. 6. Eighth graders and sixth and seventh graders who make the first cut tryout again from 3:20-5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9. For more information, email starr_don@aps.edu.

    9:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12: Student, parent and staff organization meeting will be held in the school library.

    7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13: Pre-concert at La Cueva High School.

    7:30-8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15: National Junior Honor Society members will meet in school library. Email laura.williams@aps.edu for more info.

    Madison Middle School

    Principal Tammy Crespin provided updates to the school’s end of semester events in her weekly principal’s message posted on the school’s website and via the Sunday evening robocall to parents and guardians. Important dates include:

    Dec. 5-9: Students can check out the Scholastic Book Fair with their language arts teacher. Contact the school librarian Ms. Shahan at shelby.shahan@aps.edu for more information.

    Dec. 12-16 – Finals week.

    Wednesday, Dec. 21, to Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023: Winter break.

    Thursday, Jan. 5: First day of the spring semester.

    3:15-5:30 p.m. Jan. 9-10: Girls basketball tryouts in the school gym. Students must complete a physical form before the first day of tryouts and have at least a 2.0 GPA with no Fs for the first semester. Contact Athletic Director Kate Johnson at johnson_kl@aps.edu for more information.
