Eldorado students in Don Gonzales’ wood shop class built doghouses to donate to the city’s Animal Welfare Department this semester. The students competed against wood shop classes at Sandia High School to see who could build more houses for the department’s Doghouse Drive.

According to the Animal Welfare Department webpage, The Doghouse Drive helps “bring relief to pet owners who need assistance during the cold winter months.” The department is accepting new or gently used, medium to large dog houses which can be dropped off at the east side shelter, 8920 Lomas Blvd. NE. Email ahargis@cabq.gov to have a doghouse picked up for the drive.

On Friday, Dec. 9, Albuquerque Fire Rescue paid a visit to the school. Students had the opportunity to use the “jaws of life,” participate in a pull-up challenge and try on the firefighters’ protective gear.

The joy of giving

The giving doesn’t stop with dogs. Students are also helping with the Title I Homeless Project by donating hygiene products, socks, T-shirts and underwear during fifth-period classes.

In addition, the school’s Children’s Care Club is organizing a Winter Wonderland Toy Drive at the Dairy Queen on Louisiana and Montgomery Boulevard. The toy drive is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14. Buy a blizzard and bring a toy to help those in need.
