On Sept. 28, a jury found Noah Phillip Duran guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 22-year-old Elijah Mirabal. The shooting occurred Oct. 20, 2020, at North Domingo Baca Park. This was Duran’s second trial for the same charges after a mistrial was declared earlier this year due to a hung jury. Duran and codefendant Jaden Sandoval are accused of setting up a drug deal with Mirabal on Snapchat with the intent to rob him. Madison Middle School’s volleyball team will go into its post-season tournament as the number-one seed in its division after defeating Tony Hillerman on Wednesday. “The A-team match was a battle of the undefeated,” Madison volleyball coach Michael Gallegos said. “It was a back-and-forth match with Madison winning the first game 25-19, then Hillerman winning the second game 25-19.” Madison came back to win the third set 15-13, giving them a 7-0 undefeated record. “The third game showcased the girls amazing sets, digs and hits,” Gallegos said. Cross-country Chargers senior Vivian Mitchell placed first in the APS Invitational Open girls 5,000-meter finals with a time of 22:02.99, while senior Quint Stein placed second and sophomore Lula Lo sixth in the APS Invitational Open boys 5,000-meter run finals on Saturday, Sept. 30. Stein finished with a time of 17:46.04, and Lo finished at 18:44.59. Five thousand meters is about 3.1 miles. Gas prices may soon be on the rise once again. The Organization for Petroleum Exporting Countries, Russia and Russian-led allies announced on Wednesday they will cut their oil output by 2 million barrels a day. The price of Brent Crude rose on the announcement, sitting at $93.65 a barrel as of Wednesday afternoon. On Sept. 26, the price of Brent Crude was as low as $82.86 a barrel, according to oilprice.com. The decrease in output and increase in oil prices are expected to have an impact at the pump, but no one can be sure exactly when or how much…
