Albuquerque middle school students are invited to participate in the inaugural civics bee competition launched by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Albuquerque is one of six nationwide locations selected to host the competition, according to an announcement by the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce.
At least 100 student essays will be judged by business and community members, who will decide which students qualify to compete in a quiz-style competition. There will be special guest appearances at the competition, and winners will take home cash prizes. First-place winners will receive $1,000; second place, $500; and third place, $250.
Students and community members can test their civics knowledge by taking a practice quiz at civics.uschamberfoundation.org/quiz. One question on the quiz asks what year women got the right to vote in the United States. Another asks what year the Constitution was written, and another asks how long it takes to become a naturalized citizen.
The Inaugural ABQ Civics Bee is scheduled to take place from 9:30-11:30 a.m. May 3 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Albuquerque. All essays must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. March 31. To register and submit an essay, visit greaterabq.com/inaugural-abq-civics-bee.
