Fall sports is off to a fast start. Here’s a rundown of how some of La Cueva’s teams did over the weekend:

    Football
La Cueva’s varsity football team couldn’t keep the momentum from their hyped-up season opener, falling 33-29 to Cleveland High on Friday.

Cleveland scored six points on a 75-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, missing the extra point. La Cueva came back with a touchdown by Cruz Markham, but the Storm erased the lead with 40-yard rushing touchdown and two-point conversion with six minutes to go in the first quarter. The Bears managed a 25-yard field goal before the quarter ended, with the Storm still up 14-10.

Cleveland scored early in the second quarter on a 1-yard rushing touchdown. La Cueva’s Ian Sanchez answered with a touchdown of his own after receiving a 55-yard pass from Aidan Armenta. A Cleveland interception led to the Storm scoring another touchdown before halftime, giving them a 27-17 lead at the break.

The Bears narrowed the score line with a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Miyuh Robertson in the third quarter, but then missed the extra point. Cleveland got the 10-point lead in the fourth quarter after Andres Armijo completed a 40-yard pass from Evan Wysong. Bears’ quarterback Aidan Armenta made a 1-yard rushing touchdown with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t get the ball back with enough time on the clock to score another, ending the game 33-29 in Cleveland’s favor.

    Boys soccer
The Bears varsity team fell to Volcano Vista 1-0 in its Saturday Metro Championships matchup. Volcano Vista’s Asher Saban scored the lone goal for the Hawks with an assist by senior Bryan Rivas. The Hawks received three yellow cards and the Bears two during Saturday’s matchup. Bears’ goalkeeper Mateo Nobrega made one save and had one goal against. Midfielder Malcom Star received MaxPreps player of the game for La Cueva for his performance at Saturday’s game.

La Cueva brought home silver in Boys Group A of the tournament with one win, one loss and one tie. Volcano Vista received gold with three wins in Group A.

    Girls soccer
The Lady Bears varsity soccer team defeated Volcano Vista 1-0 in its Saturday Metro Championships matchup. Sophomore Makala Chavez scored the single goal for La Cueva with an assist by senior Olivia Haddock. Goalkeeper Aubrey Salazar made eight saves for the Bears, and senior Elena Moya stopped six for the Hawks. Sasha Lucero was selected La Cueva player of the game by MaxPreps.

La Cueva took the gold in Group D of the tournament with three wins. Volcano Vista took silver in Group D with two wins and one loss.

    Volleyball
La Cueva’s varsity volleyball team will take on Rio Rancho in its first match of the season. The Bears’ away game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Rio Rancho.

The girls JV and freshman teams also play Rio Rancho on Wednesday, Aug. 31. The JV game is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the freshman team will play at 4 p.m., both in Rio Rancho.

    Cross country
The boys varsity cross country team took ninth place during Saturday’s Cleveland Invite in Rio Rancho. They finished with a score of 205. Volcano Vista took first with a score of 50. La Cueva’s girls varsity team took eighth place in the invite with a score of 183.
