Electronic Voting MachinesVoting has been going on for some time in New Mexico for the 2022 general election with several statewide offices and constitutional amendments on the ballot. With Election Day approaching, early voters shared their thoughts on their top issues.

At the early voting location at the Daskalos Center on Menual NE, folks could be seen rushing in and out quickly on Wednesday afternoon to cast their vote. At that point, 7,744 people had voted at the location on the five Electric Voting Machines (EVMs) provided.

The Neighborhood Journal asked voters what issues they care about most this election. Issues such as inflation, crime and health care were the most mentioned subjects.

What 6 of your neighbors had to say on 2022 election issues

Roxanne said one of the biggest issues for her this election is crime. “It’s just out of control, I mean you just hear all the time about people being robbed and shot. They need to build more jails,” she said.

Monica said she came out to vote because she is concerned with her right and every other woman’s right to choose to have an abortion. “Abortion rights; I am a mother, and everyone should have the right to choose.”

Elizabeth said homelessness is the biggest issue for her this election as she explains, “It’s gotten so out of hand and needs to be addressed on a national level.”

Jessica said the governor’s race is the biggest issue for her this election. “I think we need to have somebody competent in office.”

Brent said he is an independent voter, but felt the need to vote fully Democratic this election. “There’s something really wrong with the Republican party right now.”

Virgil said he has three issues that mean the most to him this election, and those are inflation, crime and the border. When referring to crime he explained it’s “probably not as bad here is in some parts of the county, but it has to be addressed.”

Barbara said she hopes that more money toward public education happens, not only for the students but also for teachers, who must deal with so much. “I think social media has done a lot of damage to kids, and what we used to learn in books these kids just Google it, and it affects their ability to retain anything,” she said.

Sean said the biggest issue for him are equality and women’s rights. “I have two daughters and I want them to continue to have the rights that were afforded to their parents and grandparents, and I fear that might not happen if other candidates win this election,” he said.
