    Volleyball

    La Cueva’s varsity volleyball team hopes to keep its win streak going when the Bears take on Farmington in a district away game at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1. The undefeated state champs have won all 21 matches played this season with only two remaining before the 2022 state tournament begins. The freshman and JV teams, who have only lost two matches each this season, also take on Farmington on Tuesday. The freshman game is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the JV team plays at 5 p.m.

    The 2022 Volleyball State Championships are scheduled for Nov. 10-12 at the Rio Rancho Event Center and Cleveland High School. La Cueva’s varsity team is ranked No. 1 in the state by MaxPreps and No. 6 in Region 8 by USA Today. Senior Ella Sanders is listed as a top performer by MaxPreps with a .370 hitting percentage and 311 kills. Junior Victoria Marthaler has 214 kills and junior Tea Kaladjzic 201 kills.

    Football

    The Bears’ varsity team defeated Farmington 62-19 in its last regular season game on Friday, Oct. 28. Ian Sanchez, who was named one of the best receivers in the country by KRQE, completed 62 yards against the Scorpions. The 5-foot, 11-inch senior has a total of 1,328 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns this season.

    La Cueva gets a bye in the first round of the 2022 6A Nusenda Credit Union State Football Championships. They play the winner of the Carlsbad vs. Farmington game in the Nov. 11-12 quarterfinals.

    Soccer

    The boys varsity team was knocked out of the 2022 5A Fuddruckers Soccer State Championships Saturday after losing 2-1 to Santa Fe. Junior Malcom Starr scored the lone goal for the Bears, and freshman Winston Starr came up with the assist. Junior goalkeeper Mateo Nobrega made four saves for the Bears and senior goalkeeper Henry Kuchta came up with five saves for the Demons. Sophomore Pablo Canivell scored the two goals for Santa Fe.

    Cleveland knocked the girls varsity team out of the state tournament after defeating the Bears 2-1 on Friday. La Cueva senior Olivia Haddock is listed as a team leader for the Bears by MaxPreps, with 13 goals and eight assists in the regular 2022-23 season.

    Cross-country

    The 2022 Western Sky Community Care State Cross Country Championships take place Saturday, Nov. 5, at Albuquerque Academy. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, military and seniors. The girls 5A race begins at 9 a.m. and the boys 5A race at 9:45 a.m. For more information, visit the New Mexico Activities Association website.
