SOCCER

Both the girls and boys from Volcano Vista had solid showing during pool play of the 2022 Albuquerque Metro Championships.

The boys won their group and advanced to the Gold Bracket. They’ll play Cleveland in a semifinal match at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the APS Soccer Complex. The championship is 7:15 p.m. Friday with the third-place game kicking off at 7 p.m. The Hawks went 3-0 in pool play, outscoring their opponents 14-1.

The girls team finished second in its group and will play in the Silver Bracket semifinal against Albuquerque Academy at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Soccer Complex. The third-place game is 7 p.m. Thursday with the title game at 7:15 p.m. The girls were 2-1 in pool play despite outscoring their opponents 19-1. They beat West Mesa 9-0 and Valley 10-0 before losing a 1-0 match to La Cueva on Saturday.

FOOTBALL

Volcano Vista improved to 2-0 with a 50-20 win over West Mesa Friday night at Community Stadium.

Quarterback Elliot Paskett-Bell threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score to lead the Hawks. Tristan Cordova had four catches for 132 yards, including an 82-yard score.

The undefeated Hawks travel to play Carlsbad Friday night.

CROSS COUNTRY

The defending state champion teams from Volcano Vista got off to a hot start to the 2022 season at the Cleveland Invitational in Rio Rancho Saturday.

The boys won the event with a score of 50 while the girls were fifth with 127 points.

Carysa Marquez was the top runner for the Lady Hawks, finishing 17th with a time of 21:01.90 on the 3-mile course. Mariana Marquez finished 26th (21:29.90:, Ariana Kedge was 30th (21:41.00), Liliana Sanchez was 33rd (21:51.40) and eighth-grader Isa Marquez was 37th (22:02.10).

The boys were led by Thomas Croshaw, who finished fourth with a time of 16:23.00.

Orion Chavez was ninth (16:52.90), Dallan Reed was 9th (17:03.00), Cruz Sanchez was 15th (17:13.10) and Stoney Cuthen finished 22nd (17:32.00).
