The Volcano Vista High School Hawks Marching Band had quite a debut at the Bands of America Regional Competition Saturday in Las Cruces.

The Hawks took second place in their class and finished sixth overall at the competition, which featured 12 schools from New Mexico and Texas in the finals. VVHS was the third-best finisher among New Mexico schools and the No. 1 performing school in Albuquerque.

The Hawks band, directed by Daniel Villanueva, performed “Call of the Sandia” as its repertoire and performed “Ecstasy of Gold” by  Ennio Morricone; “Call of the Mountain” by Joseph Curiale; “Heart of Gold” by Neil Young and “Joy” by Joseph Curiale.
