This surveillance photo shows a car that fled from police after officers were shot at Saturday.

Saturday afternoon, the Rio Rancho Police Department detained three individuals after an early-morning incident in the parking lot of the Walmart on Unser where officers were shot at.

According to RRPD, officers approached the occupants of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot at 901 Unser Blvd. at 6:25 a.m. A male left the Walmart and ran toward the vehicle, reached for a handgun and fired at officers. The officers retreated and exchanged fire with the suspect, but the vehicle fled south on Unser.

The officers were not harmed in the incident. Police were looking for a blue Honda Civic with a stolen New Mexico Chile plate ATLS48.

Less than six hours later, RRPD reported the vehicle had been found and three individuals were in custody. One individual was hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

Monday, police identified the man who was shot as 20-year-old Cheyne Estrada. He was booked into the Sandoval County Detention Center. His girlfriend, 39-year-old Syra Roman, was also arrested and is charged with conspiracy to commit receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle. Estrada was charged with two counts of aggravated assault upon a peace officer with a deadly weapon and aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer.

This continued a disturbing couple of days in Rio Rancho as an officer was injured Thursday when a car that had been stopped rammed a police unit and fled. Officers fired at the suspects before they fled.
