David Hunter started the engine on his food truck, The Kitchen Sink 505, Thursday and drove hopefully into a new career.
Hunter, a Ventana Ranch resident, set up shop at 11 a.m. at DLC UTV Parts at 2520 Jefferson St. NE and immediately drew a crowd. By 11:30 a.m., roughly 25 people were gathered around ready to order off Hunter’s menu. Hunter, his father, Steve Miera, and Hunter’s girlfriend, Florida Vigil, were hard at work in the truck to fulfill the orders.
Hunter has a varied background. He went to culinary school after high school, he’s a licensed massage therapist and currently owns a construction company. But he said he belongs in the kitchen.
“Right now, I’m kind of just ready to get back into it and finally can get it to a point where it’s all ours,” Hunter said. “It’s all family run, and it’s been a lot of work.”
Hunter is ready to put the other jobs aside and focus on running The Kitchen Sink 505.
“I’m hoping that this is all I have to do for the rest of my life,” Hunter said.
While he has worked in different fields, Hunter has bonafides in the culinary world.
He used to cater movie sets around the city, he’s worked in several restaurants, five-star resorts and even went to the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Arizona.
“I was working three jobs, going to school full time, supporting my family,” Hunter said.
Now he hopes his experience will lead to a success in the food truck industry.
The Kitchen Sink 505 menu features smash burgers, nachos, burnt-end quesadillas and tacos, smothered fries and chilaquiles — Tortilla chips fried in red chile on top of beans and served with avocado, queso fresco, a fried egg and cilantro. There’s also a no-bake cheesecake offered.
“Smash burgers are huge, you know, we love them,” Hunter said. “Chilaquiles are probably going to be one of our biggest dishes. Everything on the menu is going to be really good. We make everything in house.”
Besides Hunter’s experience and menu, there’s another thing that makes The Kitchen Sink 505 truck stand out.
“This isn’t set up like a lot of trucks,” Hunter said. “We’ve got everything in there so we can do anything we want to. A lot of people, they’re only doing burgers. So they got a couple of griddles and a couple of fryers. We’ve got a whole kitchen in there, so we can realistically do anything we want in there.”
Hunter will set up shop in the neighborhood this weekend. The Kitchen Sink 505 will be set up at Paradise Liquors Friday from 3-9 p.m. and at Ventana Ranch Park Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
