Athletes from across the state will gather Friday and Saturday hoping to bring the 2021-22 prep sports season to a thrilling end.

The 2022 Track & Field State Championship for Class 4A and 5A begins Friday with 42 preliminary running events and 14 field events finals at 8 a.m. at the University of New Mexico Track-Soccer Stadium.

The competition concludes Saturday with 14 more field events finals and the finals in all running events beginning at 8 a.m.

Both Volcano Vista teams are hoping to build off of some solid showing at the APS Metro Track & Field Championships at the end of April.

Senior Angela Korte won the 800-meter run at Metros and was part of the four by 100-meter relay team and the four by 800-meter relay team that each finished first along with Liliana Sanchez, Haili Begay and Marisa Sena.

Carysa Marquez was second in the 3,200, while Jaelyn Bates was second in both the 300 hurdles and long jump.

For the boys, Daniel Campos was second in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Bridger Schapp was fourth in the 400, and Mason Lovato was fourth in the 300 hurdles.

All across the board, we’re pretty deep,” Volcano Vista coach Elena Schrader said. “We have a mixture of veterans in this program, and we have a whole lot of young kids on this program. We’re balanced.”
