The New Mexico High School Coaches Association announced its 2021-22 all-state basketball teams Monday and, unsurprisingly, Volcano Vista led all schools with seven players earning the honor.

Both the boys and girls team finished the season as undefeated state champions, the first school in New Mexico history to do so.

Gatorade boys basketball player of the year J’Kwon Hill and fellow senior guard Kaden Valdez made the first team. Senior Jaden Malone, who scored six points in overtime of the state championship game, was named to the second team. Hill made two free throws with 4.1 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

The girls first team features seniors Jaelyn Bates and Natalia Chavez, who will both play for the University of New Mexico next season. Sophomore Taejhuan Hill, J’Kwon’s sister, also made the first team. Senior guard Kennedy Brown, daughter of boys head coach Greg Brown and granddaughter of the late legend Mike Brown, made the second team.
