The first day of the 2022-23 school year is right around the corner, and Albuquerque Public Schools wants students and parents to be prepared.

Teachers and staff on the APS extended calendar return to work Thursday, July 28, with students at those schools scheduled to start Thursday, Aug. 4. Teachers and staff on the traditional calendar begin the school year Wednesday, Aug. 3, with students starting on Aug. 10.

Schools want students to be ready for the new year and offer several recommendations to ensure they are well prepared. School supply lists are available on many of the school websites, as are hiring announcements for teachers and staff. To browse APS job postings visit aps.edu/jobs. Some of the opportunities and recommendations for students at schools in the far Northeast Heights include:

Dennis Chavez Elementary
Registration for before- and after-school programs began July 1. Dennis Chavez is partnering with the Rio Grande Educational Collaborative to provide additional educational opportunities and enrichment programs like Lego Robotics. Registration for before- and after-school program is $25. Before-school drop-off is at 6:45 a.m. and costs $38 a week or $18 for a drop-in. Students in the after-school program are picked up at 6 p.m. After-school program fees are $79 a week or $28 for drop-ins. Register online at rgec.org or call 505-873-6035 for more information.

Double Eagle Elementary
A “Quick Glance Calendar” is available through the Double Eagle ES website. The calendar includes important dates for the 2022-23 school year, including the Aug. 8 “Meet Your Teacher” day for the students. Teacher class lists will be posted on campus, with the event scheduled for 1-2 p.m.

Desert Ridge Middle School
Reading Bingo cards are still available for download on the school’s website. The game encourages students to read over the summer and features fun ideas like reading a recipe in a cookbook and then making it, under supervision of course. For more information on summer reading, contact Jordan.wulf@aps.edu or check the Desert Ridge MS website.

Jumpstart Day for incoming sixth graders is August 9 from 8 a.m. to noon. The school’s website will provide more information about the event as it becomes available.

Madison Middle School
Madison MS is reminding parents via email and on its website to register their students for the upcoming school if they have not already done so. Online registration can be done via the ParentVUE website or mobile app and is required for new and returning students.

After-school activities begin Sept. 13. Parents, guardians and students can see what is currently available and learn how to sign up for a program on the school’s website at madison.aps.edu.

A link to online safety tips for children is available on the school’s website. Some of the key messages include monitoring computer usage and browser history, establishing rules for internet use, and being aware of cyber predators. For the full list of online safety tips, click here.

La Cueva High School
The Class of 2002’s 20-year reunion is 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Tanoan Country Club.
