Rio Rapids Soccer Club players will take the field before the Sept. 2 New Mexico United game against El Paso Locomotive in recognition for their contribution to the soccer community.
Rio Rapids Executive Director Jason Moran said it is important for players to represent the club on gameday because of their relationship with United. “There is a strong connection with New Mexico United because some of the current players are ex-Rio and a bunch of the U-23 and youth academy are also players that have come through the club,” Moran said.
New Mexico United captain Josh Suggs, midfielder Cristian Nava and backup keeper Ford Parker all played for Rio Rapids before going pro. “In addition, a bunch of the coaching staff are ex-Rio coaches and Rio employees,” Moran said. “We have a strong connection and want them to see the players as role models. If a player wants to achieve professional play, we want them to see what that looks like as well.”
Rio Rapids teams play all over Albuquerque but utilize Aztec Park across from Madison Middle School and Arroyo del Oso Park for many of their practice sessions. Anyone interested in playing for the club can contact Moran at 505-331-1373 or visit riorapids.org for more information.
