The foothills 10 mile run, which moved from the La Luz Trail to the Elena Gallegos Open Space this year, will bring 400 runners together for this 10K with prize money to the top five male and female runners to cross the finish line. A grassroots organization dedicated to preserving the open space has decided to organize a rally around the event.
Save the Elena Gallegos Open Space’s public rally hopes to inform people about preserving the Elena Gallegos Open Space from the city developing an education center, which rally organizers believe will open the foothills area to further development.
The grassroots citizens committee also has a petition online that has reached 4,665 of its 5,000 signature goal. The committee says in no way are they protesting therun, but instead member hope to stop the city from violating the deed that all buildings of any kind are prohibited in the open space area.
“We are timing our rally to coincide with Parks and Rec’s new Foothills 10 Mile Run and will be at the finish line with friends and family of the runners. We are NOT protesting the run or the runners; we are protesting Parks and Rec’s planned PROHIBITED development of the EGOS,” the organization posted on its Facebook page.
The race will be from 8 a.m. to noon, and there will be no access to parking at the Elena Gallegos site.
Runners and patrons of the 10-mile event will be parking at the Albertsons at Academy and Tramway and then get bussed to the race area from 6-7:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 13. The rally will be from 9 a.m. to noon, and participants are being asked to park on nearby neighborhood streets and walk up to the EGOS at Pino Trailhead.
