The new El Portal from the New Mexico State Libraries gives free 24/7 access to all New Mexico residents with a wide variety of information, e-books and more with this collection of databases.

The NM reads section is a collection of New Mexico-based authors and stories. There are Gales in context pages from elementary, to college level. Their Newsbank has archives from newspaper sources such as the Albuquerque Journal, Roswell Daily Record and the Santa Fe New Mexican going as far back as 1994. There’s an automotive repair database that covers vehicles from the last 30 years. Brainfuse HelpNow is also a resource students can use for tutoring and homework help in English and Spanish. The Gale OneFile has a health and medicine database from peer-studied and reliable sources. Folks can even go back and get their high school diploma with the Career Online HIgh School.

There is a link to an interesting topics page with opposing viewpoints on a variety of subjects, which can give someone the full view of opinions on a hot-button issue.

Due to the newness of the site, the e-books section is small but more titles and a larger selection appear to be on the way. The site is packed with information from academic papers, encyclopedias, magazines, news sources and tons more.

The El Portal is pretty much one of the largest combined databases of information created just for New Mexico. The state library hopes students, young professionals and eventually all New Mexico residents can benefit from this new resource.

El Portal can be accessed for free from any computer in New Mexico. Thanks to a technology called Geo-IP authentication, once an IP address is validated as being within New Mexico, El Portal’s online resources can be accessed without being asked for any logon or password.

The site can be accessed from any computer, phone or tablet
