Aidan Armenta has officially joined the University of New Mexico Lobos football team.

Armenta, the quarterback for La Cueva High School, joined 10 other players in committing to the team during National Signing Day Wednesday.

According to UNM National Signing Day Central, Armenta:

  • Lettered in football and baseball at La Cueva.
  • Is the all-time leader in single-season and career passing yards and passing touchdowns.
  • Was named first-team all-state, NM Preps New Mexico Quarterback of the Year, two-time first team all-district, first-team all-metro, and Red-Green New Mexico All-Star.
  • Threw for 4,300 yards as a senior (seventh nationally) with 50 touchdowns and a 64% completion percentage.
  • Is a NM Preps New Mexico Heisman winner and two-time academic all-district selection.

“We asked Santa for the state of New Mexico’s best QBs … and Santa did it again,” New Mexico Football tweeted out in an announcement of Armenta’s signing. “Let’s welcome to the Lobo Family one of the best QB’s NM has seen in a long time, Aidan Armenta!”

“Congratulations to Aidan Armenta. Today, he officially became a Lobo! We’re all proud of you, Go Lobos!” the La Cueva Athletics Twitter account posted Wednesday.

Other NM signees

The Lobos also picked up two players from Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho on signing day. Nic Trujillo and Evan Wysong, both wide receivers, also committed to UNM.

The Cleveland Storm defeated the La Cueva Bears for the 6A state title in November with a score that resembled a basketball game more than a football game. The 75-61 shootout was the highest-scoring 11-man championship football game in state history.
