La Cueva High School won first place in the Class 5A Rocket League and League of Legends 2022 NMAA Esports championship. Albuquerque Academy won first place in the Class 4A championship League of Legends game. The first ever in-person tournament finals took place at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center Friday, April 22.

Rocket League can be played on the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch, with three players per team in championship play. It is a fast-paced game where players try to score goals with a vehicle. It is like “soccer with cars,” according to the PlayVS website. Teams take home the championship title after playing the best of seven games in the finals.

League of Legends is a PC-based multiplayer online battle arena game. The objective is to destroy the other team’s base, known as a Nexus. According to the PlayVS website, League of Legends is the “most popular esport with 12 leagues competing around the world,” with some 100 million in-person and online fans viewing the 2019 League of Legends World Championship.
