Many members of the homeless population keep animals not only for safety but also companionship during a tough time. Many of those people also feed their animals before themselves and can rarely afford pet food, necessities or health care.

Feeding Pets of the Homeless is a national nonprofit program aimed toward homeless to be able to keep and provide for their animals. The organization not only helps provide the homeless with pets supplies but also health care and even finding temporary housing where their pets can come, too.

There are donation sites throughout the city, and collectors need anything from dog food and treats to toys, collars and leashes, blankets and beds, or carriers. Items can be taken to the following locations:

• ABQ Petcare at 9032 Montgomery Blvd. NE

• VCA at 2740 Wyoming Blvd NE Suite #1

• Aztec Animal Clinic at 4340 Coal Ave. SE

All donations are then picked up and distributed at locations such as HopeWorks or the Compassion Center, which both take in homeless people with companion animals.
