One hundred trees were planted in the Heritage East neighborhood last month, thanks in part to funding from District 4 City Councilor Brook Bassan, Tree New Mexico and the city-sponsored NeighborWoods program.
On Saturday, Oct. 22, Heritage East Association of Residents President Daniel Martinez said the trees he helped secure through a grant were already planted.
“Brook Bassan and I have secured a grant for Heritage East to have 100 trees (already) planted in the neighborhood and today we’re giving away an additional 100 starting at 9 @ Rotary Park,” Martinez wrote in a direct message.

An Oct. 13 Tree New Mexico Facebook post asked for volunteers to help plant the trees in Heritage East on Oct. 15. According to the post, holes were already dug, and trained leaders helped volunteers to plant five to eight trees using readily available tools and maps.
Tree New Mexico’s Facebook page says Nov. 10 marked the last day of planting for the 2022 season. That planting took place in the West Park and Huning Castle neighborhoods.
The Tree New Mexico website says trees benefit neighborhoods by:
- Slowing down evaporation and increasing atmospheric moisture.
- Improving community health.
- Slowing traffic.
- Conserving energy and reducing summer cooling costs.
- Increasing home values by up to 15%
- Reducing crime.
