Brandon Kennedy, host of KUNM Studio Sessions, has taken on another musical venture.

As many locals pined for dance venues during the pandemic, Kennedy’s solution was to have outdoor headphone dance parties at parks and open spaces throughout Albuquerque.

The Spring Equinox event runs 2:30-5 p.m. Sunday at the double shelter outdoor amphitheater at Elena Gallegos Open Space, featuring guest local DJ “The Rev.” Mitton. Headphones, which have been properly sanitized, are available to borrow at the event. Patrons can also bring their own Bluetooth-capable sets.

The parties, or silent discos, can help to include kids with sensory issues or anxiety caused by loud noises, common symptoms in autistic children. Everyone controls their own volumes, and no one is disturbed by loud music with social distancing in mind.

Kennedy’s parties  have gotten a bit of a following on his private facebook group. Although the group is private, anyone in Albuquerque is encouraged to join where there are consistent events at local parks all over the city.

Deeming himself “A prophet sent to Earth to spread a message of love through The Funk,” the Rev. has been a musical influence in the local dance music scene since 1993.

Sunday’s event is free and all ages, as well as families, are encouraged to come out, bring snacks and water, and have some fun while enjoying a view of the mountains.

Parking is free when mentioning the Headphone Dance Party
