Volcano Vista principal Melissa Sedillo posted on Facebook Tuesday to announce a gun was confiscated from a student’s backpack in the school’s south parking lot.

Sedillo wrote that the lot was shut down, and the student was arrested and is facing criminal charges for bringing the gun on campus. The school will also discipline the student.

Albuquerque Public Schools Police are handling the investigation.

The post said multiple individuals came forward to let administration know about the gun.

“School safety is a community responsibility and we encourage people to come forward as they did today when they learn of possible threats to our students and staff,” Sedillo wrote in the post. “We take every threat or rumor of danger seriously and work closely with APS Police and other law enforcement. I want to assure you that we are doing everything we can at Volcano Vista to keep our campus safe.”
