Tapia Promotions, led by Teresa Tapia, will present a boxing card Friday to honor the 10-year anniversary of the death of legendary New Mexican boxer — and Teresa’s husband — Johnny Tapia.

Teresa Tapia speaks at a press conference Thursday at The Office Bar & Grill.

The event will be held at The Office Bar & Grill at Paradise Hills Golf Course and will be headlined by New Mexico fighter and Johnny Tapia protege Josh “Pitbull” Torres, who will face undefeated Michigan fighter Reggie Harris. It will be Torres’ first fight in nearly a year after he suffered an ankle fracture.

It’s going to be a great night of boxing,” Torres said at a press conference Thursday. “Reggie is undefeated, and that’s for a reason. He’s a young, hungry, ambitious fighter. So, these are the kinds of fights that I want to give you guys. I want to give the fans what they deserve. I could have brought in a journeyman. We’re bringing in Reggie Harris and he’s not coming to lose. So expect fireworks; it’s gonna be a great event.”

In the co-main event, Albuquerque’s Matt “Diamond Boy” Griego will fight Californian Gilberto Mendoza. Griego, like many New Mexican fighters, grew up idolizing Tapia.

“I want to thank Tapia Promotions and Teresa Tapia for having me on the show,” Griego said. “I’m excited to put on the show for the memorial. Johnny Tapia, you know, probably most people in New Mexico, that’s their idol, so that’s amazing to put on the show here.”

Doors open at 3 p.m. with five amateur fights beginning at 4 p.m., including Teresa and Johnny’s 17-year-old son Nicco stepping into the ring to honor his legendary father.

Five professional bouts are then scheduled to take place, including the first heavyweight bare-knuckle bout in the history of New Mexico between Terrance Brown and Christopher Kharazi.

Tickets range from $25-70 and can be purchased here.
