The first application for an outdoor space has been approved by city planning.  Dawn Legacy Pointe, which put in the application for the site at 1250 Menaul NE, now has to contend with the city council voting to possibly ban outdoor spaces at its next meeting Aug. 15.

At least four other applications were entered to city planning; one was denied at 7440 Jim McDowell Road NW near Double Eagle Airport.

Other proposed locations waiting for application approval include 5915 Bluewater Road NW, 512 Wheeler Ave. SE, and 715 Candelaria Road NE.

Each location would allow up to 50 people to temporarily reside at the outdoor spaces, with the exception of the Candelaria location capping at 12 occupants.

A Safe Outdoor Space (SOS) provides dedicated spaces for tents, recreational vehicles or light vehicles for temporary occupancy. An SOS also provides social services and support facilities for occupants. According to the city website, they are restricted to 40 designated spaces with 50 occupants per site. It limits the number of sites to two in each of the city’s nine council districts.

An operations and management or security agreement must be included with the application for a Safe Outdoor Space. The plan or agreement must indicate there will be on-site support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There will be a council vote on bill O-22-33 on Aug. 15, which proposes to remove Safe Outdoor Spaces from the IDO. The vote comes after the announcement of the closure of Coronado Park this month, which currently houses roughly 120 people who will be displaced. That announcement could factor into the council’s vote.
