School is out, and that means it’s officially swimming pool season. On May 28, city of Albuquerque public pools opened their doors for the season.

For the 25-yard-long Eisenhower pool, one of Albuquerque’s most popular, that means big crowds and a lot to be enthusiastic about.

“We are really excited to be open,” said Rio, Eisenhower Pool manager.

Thanks to some new safety protocols that are designed to help handle capacity overload, the staff at Eisenhower public pool, located at Eisenhower Middle School, 11001 Camero NE, is looking forward to a summer filled with fun in the sun.

From left, lifeguards Jocelyn, Rio (manager), and Liam stand ready to let in the summer crowds at Eisenhower Pool.

“We are implementing a new thing called wristbands,” said Rio. “We didn’t do this in the past. It was always first come, first serve, but we would have such a long line of people that folks were getting 20 minutes to swim at the very end, so we are excited about the new wristband system.”

According to Rio, the city of Albuquerque website will sell 30 wristbands per session (available for purchase up to two days in advance), and 25 more will be available for sale at the door (starting at noon.) She also said there is a possibility for expanding the capacity on the weekends, depending on staffing. Passholders will still be required to sign up for a wristband.

To sign up for a wristband, go to cabq.gov/parksandrecreation or give the pool a call. Monthly passes can be purchased at play.cabq.gov

“Wristbands are new, so if anyone has questions, give us a call,” said Rio.

Along with the new system, the staff said they are looking forward to getting the aquatic Ttam back on track and diving into teaching the next generation of little ones to swim. Sign-up for June swim classes has already begun, but the July session begins sign-ups on June 18.
