The Lady Bears were ultimately defeated 3-2 on Albuquerque High’s home turf in their first girls varsity soccer matchup of the season.
La Cueva senior Olivia Haddock scored an early goal for the Bears, but the Bulldogs answered quickly after a corner kick ended with the ball in the back of the net for Albuquerque High. The Bulldogs then took a 2-1 lead in the second part of the first half after a shot screamed past La Cueva’s number one. The Lady Bears immediately returned the favor with a goal of their own, tying it up 2-2 before the whistle blew at halftime.
La Cueva continued to dominate in possession, keeping the ball on the Bulldogs side of the field during the second half but a long shot that flew over the keeper’s hands left them down 3-2. The Lady Bears fought hard and won many of the battles on the pitch, but Albuquerque High’s keeper, and the crossbar, made it impossible for them to score.
La Cueva sustained one injury resulting in a substitution, and Albuquerque High’s goalie could be seen limping after a hard hit but stayed on the pitch for the full match. Albuquerque High also received a late yellow card for rough play along the sideline, yet still held on to their lead to take the win.
