This could be a historic week for Volcano Vista High School basketball.
Tuesday, the girls team hosts Centennial at 6 p.m.in the quarterfinals of the State Basketball Tournament. Wednesday, the boys host Carlsbad at 7 p.m.
Those are the first steps for each team in doing something no other school has done in the history of New Mexico high school basketball has done: have both the boys and girls team go undefeated in the same season.
The girls are 26-0 this year and seeded first in Class 5A. After beating Santa Fe 72-28 Friday in the first round of the state tourney, the Hawks have won 39 straight games dating back to last year’s COVID-shortened championship campaign.
The boys are also 26-0 but are the No. 2 seed. They opened state with a 74-41 win over Organ Mountain Saturday.
With three more wins each this week, Volcano Vista will make history.
Girls coach Lisa Villareal can make a little more history herself.
A state crown this season would be the fifth for Villareal in her 14 years coaching Volcano Vista. No other woman who has coached female prep basketball has more than four.
Should the girls advance, their semifinal game would be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and the championship game will be Friday at 6 p.m. at the Pit.
The boys semifinal will be at 2 p.m. Friday, with the championship game set for 8 p.m. Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Pit.
