Nearly 200 students were expected to receive their high school diplomas at graduation events Tuesday.
The Albuquerque Public Schools summer graduation ceremonies were held to celebrate students who took summer classes to earn credits needed to receive their high school diploma. The district anticipated approximately 170 of the 242 participating students would attend, with five students receiving their diplomas early.
“This is a very diverse group of graduates. They attended different schools. They grew up in different neighborhoods. They took a variety of paths to get this achievement,” said APS Superintendent Scott Elder. “Some of them learn differently than others or had to help support their family. Some of them faced illness or injury or just needed a little more time to mature or get motivated. And a handful of them chose to get it done early, taking extra classes over the years so they could hurry up and start the next chapter of their lives. I am proud of them all and congratulated them and their families.”
The morning schedule honored students from Albuquerque, Del Norte, Eldorado, Freedom, Highland, La Cueva, Manzano, nex+Gen and Sandia, while the afternoon session featuring graduates from Atrisco Heritage, Cibola, College & Career, Early College, eCademy, New Futures, Rio Grande, School on Wheels, Valley, Volcano Vista and West Mesa.
While students from many schools gathered together for the ceremonies, each celebrated by wearing caps and gowns in their school colors.
