The Central New Mexico Audubon Society is sponsoring the 2022 Birdathon May 8-15. Teams will pick a 24-hour period during the allotted dates to find the most bird species in the state. The individual and team who find the most species will be awarded prizes.
This year, participants in Albuquerque have the opportunity to check out bird-watching kits from their branch library to help locate the different species. The Cherry Hills library had four kits available for checkout mid-April, but the kits can be found at other locations as well.
Teams are encouraged to ask colleagues, friends and families to make pledges or donations based on how many species are found. Proceeds will go to the Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area in Valencia County for conservation and education projects in Central New Mexico. Donations can also be made on the cnmas.newmexicoaudubon.org webpage or by sending a check to CNMAS, P.O. Box 30002, Albuquerque, NM 87190-0002.
A checklist of species found, locations and team names need to be emailed to cnmasreg@gmail.com by May 22, 2022, to be eligible for prizes. For more information, visit the CNMAS website or ask a local librarian about the Birdathon when visiting or checking out bird-watching kits.
